Is there any reason why turning the key off didnt help him?

Mum's cruise control got stuck on once when I was driving home from work. I was on the back roads near my house. My foot was hard on the brakes and they worked for a little while then burned out and stopped working.

Then I switched the car off.....

Still doesn't quite make sense. I can understand the brake pedal switch failing, but the ignition switch, transmission selector (at least to put it into a lower gear to reduce the speed, or neutral), cruise control master switch, 'decelerate' button etc all failing, and then he claims he pulled up by using the brakes anyway. He had heaps of time to figure it out... probably just distracted by his phone calls.

I think the guys likes the sauso!!

Hard to believe that he couldnt change gears, turn it off, or stand on the fucking brake as soon as it happened.

My sister in-law's Astra had aftermarket cruise, and it was holding the throttle open. My brother being my brother decided to drive it from the Gold Coast to Brisbane. He got to Loganholme and the brakes ran out. He managed to stop it. The left front tyre popped due to the heat, and when I got there about 35mins after he stopped the brake were still smoking. Some lady told him to poor water on them, he rang me and asked... NO FUCKING WAY!!!

Ended up costing $1800 to fix the car. The pistons in the calipers melted they got that hot. It was all caused by a nut coming lose. I had fixed the problem within a few minutes.

Total crapola! This bloke was actually on the radio this morning, and said the cruise was stuck set at 100km/h. Apparently the brakes would only get him down to 80, then failed and went back up to 100. Then he said he stopped by ripping the handbrake and JAMMING THE BRAKES! I thought they failed you duche bag!

One funny thing I saw on the news.com.au story was they "impounded" the car. I would love it if he now gets charged under hoon laws for speeding and wreckless driving! :P

Exploders must have that bullshit key lock thing so fat mouthbreathing americans can't accidentally turn off the ignition. Pretty sure you have to have it in park and your foot on the brake before it'll start the engine, too.

When I heard this on the radio today, I immediately thought of this :
http://www3.signonsandiego.com/stories/ ... ash-probe/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Hill said investigators are studying the burned Lexus, witness accounts, evidence from the crash scene and the 911 call made by back seat passenger Lastrella. A full report should be complete in a few weeks, he said.

The car was northbound at about 120 mph on state Route 125 about 6:30 p.m., Hill said, when it entered a T-intersection with Mission Gorge Road, clipped the rear corner of a Ford Explorer and then plowed over a curb and through a fence before hitting an embankment and going airborne. It rolled several times and then burst into flames.

Hill thinks Saylor, who was driving, started to experience problems with the accelerator sometime before he reached the Route 125 and Interstate 8 intersection, which is about five miles from Mission Gorge Road. Several people called to report that the car was seen speeding and weaving in and out of lanes with its emergency flashers on.

Hill said the evidence shows that there was prolonged “heavy, heavy, hard braking.”

“He did everything he could to stop that car,” he said.

It was a matter of minutes between when the problem started and when the car ran off the road, Hill said, and Saylor had to make a “split-second decision” to head straight into the intersection rather than to take the state Route 52 curve.

“He was still trying to figure out what was wrong with the car,” Hill said. Saylor, a 19-year CHP veteran, must have worked extremely hard to maneuver the Lexus to avoid other cars on the heavily traveled roadway, only hitting the one vehicle, Hill said.

“We were very lucky that there were not more deaths,” Hill said.

Investigators do not know if Saylor tried to shift the car into neutral or if he tried to shut off the engine
tl:dr

Basically, Toyota USA is recalling a HUGE amount of cars because the floor mats jam the accelerator - the article is about an off duty police officer and his family who died because the accelerator was stuck. They called 911 for help after driving 5 miles as the car reached 120mph.......

Sad story, but there are parallels to this guy in his Exploder - you've got to wonder why didn't they turn off the engine, or shift to neutral, or hit the brakes HARD for repeated short bursts.

Perhaps the Yanks just take the idiot-proofing too far and it backfired. There's another article in Drive just now:

http://www.drive.com.au/Editorial/Artic ... 8130&vf=12" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Funny quote:
Mr Weir, who recently arrived in Melbourne from Queensland, says he was stuck on 80km/h on the freeway and shutting off the engine and hitting the brakes had no effect.

Must be a very interesting car if it continues to drive even after the engine has been shut off. Even a FORD is not that powerful.

I fail to believe that story is true - Not able to turn the key off, or put the car in neutral? Or overpower that insane V6 with the foot brake? What a lod of shit - the brakes on my car are probably smaller than the ones on the exporer and they can slow the car from 100 in third gear even at WOT (I know this because I have tried to start a powerskid on the freeway before....don't pretend you wouldn't if you could :P )

What happened when he finally brought the car to a halt? Did it sit there on the converter like an 8 second VL until the box/engine melted? Or did someone who isn't an intellectual cripple just turn it off?

If I was a paramedic at the scene I would have put that neck brace on very bloody tightly...if you get my drift.

OK does anyone in here have a explorer.
I think we need to first figure this out.
If you can turn car off or put it in drive while driving .

The mechanics in here who have worked on one of these should be able to give light on situation.

If this is american car
does it have a handbrake
or does it have a Foot Hand break.

Ok so here is my 2cents worth on the matter, i believe that he paniced and as a result didn't actually listen to what they were saying when they asked him to "turn off the car", it keeps saying he tried to take out the key but as even i am aware you can't just pull the key out whilst it is in the on position (well at least not in the newer model cars anyhow..........lol), unfortunatly when things happen that you least expect you just panic, however you also try everything you can think off like doing everything at once if each thing on its own fails.

Reading the comments from the Hearald Sun i found this one interesting
"We have a 2003 'Exploder', the thing weighs over 2000kg, the hand brake is usless at stopping the car, the brakes are spongey and it takes a lot to pull-up under normal driving anyway, if it was the 4.6ltr V8 it probably keep moving without too much trouble.. most of them are autos and he should have been able to knock it into neutral, the gear selector doesnt have a lock from drive to neutral, you can slip it into neutral at any speed.. sounds like he just paniced!"

At the end of the day i guess the result of no one being hurt was the best outcome, but why it took so long to acheive is the most intesting thing.

I bealive that it was more a driver fault due to panic than a mechaincal or computer fault :)

BROCKYB8, explorers have hand brakes... I did a week of work experience with a mechanic as part of my tafe work, the hand brake on the car broke... the mechanics couldn't get a replacement part, the leaver wasn't pulling on the cable enough cos some bit of plastic broke so they drilled a hole and put a bolt through the thing which took up a lot of slack in the cable.

Look at your car. Now back to mine. Now back to yours. Now back to mine. Sadly, yours isn't mine. But if you stopped buying dodgy cars and bought an ED, yours could be like mine. Look down. Back up. Where are you? ...You're on BoostedFalcon, reading the signature your signature could be like! Anything is possible when your car looks like my car... I'm on a computer.

I wonder what will happen with the testing that Ford does to the car in question..

I refuse to believe this stupid **** and I hope that Ford can prove the guy is lying or panicked.
